The network marketing world has been virtually (pun intended) into two camps. We have the old school regime who believes the most effective way to build a business is face-to-face, belly-to-belly, word of mouth marketing to the list of the 200 or so best people you know.
Old schoolers may teach you create leads by doing trade shows, handing out postcards, flyers, mailers, DVD’s, CD’s and the such to pretty much everyone you meet.
Then we have the new school regime that has taken the entire business online with a philosophy called Attraction Marketing. Essentially, attraction marketing is based on timeless marketing principles and human psychology that says people are attracted to other people who:
a) Have what they want (success, knowledge, charm, skills, beauty, etc) and
b) They feel they can benefit from through association.
Creating leads for your home business through attraction marketing is about putting value out into the marketplace to benefit people and offering solutions to their existing business challenges.
As you become this source of knowledge and leadership, you attract significantly more people to you. Over some time, this helps you create a following of people who you have provided value for and helped, whether they ever join your primary business or not.
It’s like an old fashion street gang war. The old-schoolers slam the online guys. The online guys slam the belly-to-belly boys. It’s funny actually…unless you are stuck in the middle.
Personally, I don’t think that any one system works for everyone. I think in order to build a truly successful business you need to let people swim in the stream they are best suited for. I’ve built massive businesses using both methods and there are traps to both.
In today’s market though, I don’t think there is any reason why anyone would enter into network marketing without using some sort of online lead generation funnel and follow some of the best attraction marketing programs available.
You are simply leaving too much business on the table if you don’t and nothing will explode your business faster than enrolling an internet marketer that really knows how to drive traffic.
With that said, regardless of how you choose to build your business, it’s important to decide HOW you want to show up in your business. When people are trying to duplicate an upline or a system in order to create leads and sponsor new reps, it’s easy to start saying the words and going through the motions whether they are in alignment with who you are or not.
This is a mistake.
Take some time as you get going to take some personal inventory. Really get clear about your values and how you want to show up in your business.
Do you value integrity, authenticity, power, compassion, fun, wealth, character? What are your driving foundational values?
If hype turns you off, don’t use it.
If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
Believe me, over the 17 years of being around this industry I have been on all sides of this equation. I have had my share of financial wins and losses, but for me, unless I did it on my own terms, in my own way, while being completely authentic…it didn’t work for me whether I made money or not.
So take a minute. Write out your core values. Go learn about attraction marketing if you haven’t yet and decide how you will show up.
Build it once. Make it last.
